Paragliding Cape Town: Soaring Heights

Table of Contents

Cape Town is one of the most spectacular places on Earth to go paragliding. With Table Mountain behind you and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out below, every flight is breathtaking.

But when you book a tandem paragliding flight, you’ll often be told that take-off will be from either Signal Hill or Lion’s Head, depending on the wind. Both sites are beautiful — yet very different.

Here’s a pilot’s guide to how they compare.

Paragliding Cape Town: Soaring Heights

Signal Hill — The Classic Cape Town Launch

Signal Hill is where we fly most often. It works best with northwest or westerly winds, which are common in Cape Town.

It’s easily accessible — you can drive right up and walk only a few meters to the take-off zone. This makes it ideal for first-timers or anyone looking for a relaxed start.

Cape Town’s weather, however, changes daily. We can’t always fly, and every flight feels different:

  • On some days, strong winds allow us to soar longer.

  • On others, thermals and updrafts lift us higher than the take-off site.

  • Occasionally, downdrafts or easterly winds shorten the flight.

It’s all part of the magic — every launch is a new adventure.

Pro tip: The best flights often happen during northwest wind and slightly cloudy skies, which provide smoother air and better lift.

No matter the conditions, everyone lands with a big smile on their face.

Lion’s Head — The Rare Southwest Adventure

Lion’s Head offers something rare and thrilling. We only fly from there when we get southwesterly wind, which usually happens once or twice a month — so it’s a bit of a luck-of-the-draw moment.

After a 10–15 minute hike along the scenic trail, we reach the take-off — a short, steep slope overlooking Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles.

When conditions line up perfectly, the launch from Lion’s Head can actually be easier than Signal Hill. And once airborne, the thermals often lift us all the way to the summit, where the view makes you feel on top of the world.

Flights here tend to last longer and feel more dynamic, with dramatic scenery and stronger lift.

Pilot’s Insight

“Signal Hill is where we fly most often, but Cape Town weather changes every day. Some days we soar high; some days the downdrafts push us down faster — that’s part of the fun!

Lion’s Head only works in southwest wind, which we get once or twice a month. When it happens, we hike up, take off from the steep slope, and often climb to the summit with thermals. That’s when you truly feel like you’re on top of the world.”
