Is Tandem Paragliding Safe? An Honest Look

It is the question almost everyone asks before their first flight, and it is a fair one. Here is an honest look at how tandem paragliding works in Cape Town, and why it is safer than most people expect.

You fly with a qualified pilot

On a tandem flight you are clipped in in front of a licensed pilot who does all the flying. You do not need any experience or training. Our pilots fly under SAHPA, the South African Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, and between us we have more than 35 years in the air over Cape Town. Reading this coastline’s wind is what we do every week of the season.

We only fly in the right conditions

Paragliding depends on the weather, and that is a safety feature, not an inconvenience. If the wind is too strong, too gusty, or coming from the wrong direction, we do not fly. It is that simple. This is also why we never take a deposit: if conditions are not safe, we reschedule you for free rather than pushing a flight that should not happen.

The equipment

Your flight uses a certified tandem wing, a harness for you and the pilot, a helmet, and a reserve parachute packed for exactly the situation you hope never to need. The pilot checks every part of the setup before each flight. Modern paragliding gear is well proven and maintained to a standard.

What the flight actually feels like

Take-off is a few running steps and then a smooth, gentle lift as the wing catches the air. There is no big drop and no stomach-lurch like a rollercoaster. Most people are surprised by how calm and quiet it is once you are up, just you, the pilot, and the view. Landing is soft and controlled, usually on your feet or gently onto your seat.

Who can fly

We fly guests from age 14 and up, and most reasonable fitness levels are fine. You need to be able to do a few running steps at take-off, which the pilot guides you through. If you have a heart condition, a recent injury, or you are pregnant, let us know when you book so we can advise you honestly.
